Staff Reports

Falling annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent, “Laetare Sunday,” the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Catholic Relief Services Collection will take place in Diocese of Trenton parishes this year on the weekend of March 26-27.

The collection for CRS will support six Catholic agencies that prioritize the family and protect both the life and dignity of individuals: CRS, for international relief and development; Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) for refugee resettlement; Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc. (CLINIC) for immigration and legal services; Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development (JPHD) for advocacy; the Holy Father’s Relief fund for emergency relief and the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church for evangelization and ministry.

“The Catholic Relief Services Collection values families,” the USCCB’s website explains. “It works to provide for their basic humanitarian needs, protect vulnerable children, reunite families, and encourage legislation that reflects the importance of family in society.”

The collection’s efforts span the globe, working in every continent among an array of ethnicities and backgrounds, addressing myriad needs – including war, natural disasters, political strife, extreme poverty and human trafficking.

“Families are separated by migration for long periods of time, sometimes indefinitely,” the U.S. Bishops stated. “A decrease in the availability of visas makes prompt reunification unrealistic. Unaccompanied minors are exploited. Difficult and expensive legal systems keep families apart.”

Programs funded by the CRS Collection help with relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war and natural disasters, as well as development projects to improve living conditions for the poor.

If you miss the collection, donations can be sent to: Catholic Relief Services Collection, Office of National Collections, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, P.O. Box 96278, Washington, D.C. 20090-6278. Checks may be made payable to Catholic Relief Services Collection.
