Continuing its efforts to support dialogue between Church leaders and the laity, The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., will host a kick-off conversation to introduce the Synod on the theme “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission.”

The conversation will take place Feb. 28, 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the university’s Della Ratta Auditorium in Maloney Hall and will also be livestreamed at https://livestream.com/catholicuniversity.

Archbishop Christophe Pierre, papal nuncio to the United States, will visit with John Garvey, CUA president, and the conversation will be moderated by Stephen White, executive director of The Catholic Project – an initiative from CUA to foster effective collaboration between the clergy and laity of the Church in the wake of the sexual abuse crisis.

In response to many Catholics’ curiosity, the event will attempt to answer the question, “What is a synod and why should we care?”

“The Synod is a chance to discern together what the Holy Spirit is asking of us as a community,” The Catholic Project explained in a press release. “This discernment requires the whole Church to ‘listen humbly’ (to Scripture and Tradition, to the ‘signs of the times,’ to one another, to those on the peripheries and even to those outside the Church) and ‘speak boldly’ with conviction and charity.”

The Catholic Project extended the invitation to the entire CUA community and beyond to “walk together as we join the global Church in this discernment, for the good of our university and in service to the mission of the whole Church.”

As the university of the Bishops of the United States, CUA is “uniquely situated to bring about needed change in accordance with its mission,” states The Catholic Project’s website, “to discover and impart the truth through excellence in teaching and research, all in service to the Church, the nation and the world.” The Catholic Project addresses accountability, transparency, evangelization, reform and renewal in the areas of education, formation, research, events and media.
