R. Ross Fales named first lay president of Christian Brothers Academy

R. Ross Fales, who currently serves as principal of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, will become the school’s first lay president, in July. Fales’ appointment was announced Feb. 16 by CBA.
As president, Fales, succeeds Christian Brother Frank Byrne, who left CBA in July 2021 to assume the position as auxiliary provincial of The Brothers of the Christian Schools’ District of Eastern North America. Christian Brother Thomas Gerrow currently serves as CBA’s interim president.
Fales is a familiar face around CBA, an all-boys, college preparatory, secondary school. He joined the faculty in 2002 and then in 2006, he transitioned from the classroom into administration when he was named Dean of Students. In 2007, he was appointed associate principial, a role he held until 2015 when he was named principal.
“This Academy was built on the shoulders of three incredible previous presidents, all of them Christian Brothers, and each contributing to the success and advancement of CBA, making it the outstanding institution it is today,” Fales said. “I will strive to uphold this great legacy, whole also helping CBA progress in continuing to deliver an excellent, holistic and Christian education in the 21st century.”
Christian Brother Robert Schaefer, provincial of the Brother’s District of Easter North America, shared his excitement on the selection of Fales and his gratitude for the work of the educational search firms and presidential search committees.
“On behalf of the Christian Brothers, I want to thank the search committee for their work in identifying the best candidate to lead Christian Brothers Academy at this time,” Brother Robert said, “Mr. Ross Fales, a longtime Lasallian education and leader, understands our charism and tradition to ensure that CBA continues to provide a quality human and Christian education to the young men entrusted to this outstanding school community.”
In his role as principal, Fales led the school throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and was instrumental in creating the academy’s return to school plan. He increased the number of class offerings to the educational program with the inclusion of additional Advanced Placement courses and instituted a dual enrollment agreement with Manhattan College, Bronx, N.Y. Additional varsity sports and electives in music, theater and robotics were also added during his tenure.
Fales will take on the role of president while the 157-acre campus is renovated and new facilities are constructed. He plans to continue the work of the of educating the “whole person,” a hallmark of the Christian Brothers since the order’s founding by St. John Baptist de La Salle more than 300 years ago.
“I truly view my work at CBA as a vocation much more than just employment,” Fales continued. “A notable quote amongst the Christian Brothers is that Lasallian education ‘seeks realistic ways of touching hearts and teaching minds of students.’ I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the CBA community in doing just that.”
