A celebration for Msgr. Dermond’s 80th birthday


Members of the Haitian community in Mercer County hosted a celebration for Msgr. John K. Dermond’s 80th birthday Feb. 5 in St. Anthony Church hall, Hamilton. A retired priest of the Diocese, Msgr. Dermond’s actual birthday was Jan. 17.

During his nearly 54 years of priesthood, Msgr. Dermond served the Diocese in numerous capacities including as judicial vicar in the diocesan Tribunal as well as pastor of St. Francis of Assisisum Parish, Trenton; St. Joseph Parish, Trenton, and rector of St. Mary of the Asssumption Cathedral, Trenton. During his time as pastor of St. Francis, Msgr. Dermond ministered to the Haitian community, where they gathered for Mass and the celebration of other Sacraments.

Among those gathered for Msgr. Dermond’s 80th birthday were Msgr. Thomas Gervasio, diocesan vicar general and pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish; Father Pierre-Michele Alabre and Father Daniel Gowen, parochial vicars of Our Lady of Sorrow-St. Anthony Parish; Father Jean Felicien, who serves in the diocesan Tribunal and is parochial vicar of St. James Parish, Pennington; St. George Parish, Titusville, and St. Alphonsus Parish, Hopewell, and Deacon Luders Desire, who is currently assigned to Corpus Christi Parish, Willingboro.

In retirement, Msgr. Dermond continues to assist in the Tribunal and with the celebration of the Sacraments in Our Lady of the Angels Parish, Trenton.
