CYO gears up for 2022-2023 basketball season

Remaining committed to allowing all youth in the greater Mercer County area who either attend a Catholic school or parish religious education program the opportunity to play CYO basketball, the Mercer County Catholic Youth Organization has announced its schedule for the 2022-2023 season.

An Opening Day Mass at 9 a.m. will be celebrated Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. in the Monsignor Toomey Annex at the CYO Yardville Branch, 453 Yardville-Allentown Road. Opening day games will follow at the CYO Center in Trenton, 920 South Broad Street.

The CYO leagues that are available for youth include: the varsity leagues are for those in seventh and eighth grade; the junior varsity leagues for those in fifth and sixth grades, and the freshmen league for youth in fourth grade and  under.

The CYO announced the dates for the coaches meetings: Sept. 15 – Girls Freshmen; Sept. 19 – Girls Junior Varsity; Sept. 21 – Boys Junior Varsity; Sept. 22 – Girls Varsity; Sept. 26 – Boys Varsity; Sept. 28 – Boys Freshmen. All meetings will be held in the CYO Center, 920 South Broad Street, Trenton, starting at 6:30 p.m. Each school/parish must send representation to each league meeting in which they will be entering a team.

Quincy Walzer, CYO athletic director, noted that this year the CYO is looking to have “Parish Team Mergers” for smaller parishes in the county that have not been able to field teams on their own in previous years due to low enrollment numbers.

In addition to the “Parish Team Mergers,” Walzer said the CYO will continue to offer the “Waiver Request System” for those youth who are enrolled in either a Catholic school or parish religious education program at a parish that does not sponsor a team in the CYO league but wishes to play CYO basketball. Those youth who are eligible to play through a granted waiver will be placed on a participating team based on team need and geographical location.
