A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Sept. 17, 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Trenton, for Margarita Laó Ramos, St. Joseph parishioner and mother of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton director Marlene Laó-Collins, who died Sept. 9. She was 89.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sept. 16, 6 – 9 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 540 Olden Avenue. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to Mass Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery and Mausoleum, 1200 Cedar Ln., Hamilton.

Born in 1932 in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, Mrs. Laó Ramos came to live with her aunt in the Bronx, N.Y., at age 16. She married her husband, Abraham, Aug. 25, 1956, and the couple lived and raised their two children, Marlene and Kelvin, in Hoboken.

Longtime parishioners of St. Joseph Parish in Hoboken, Margarita and Abraham were actively involved in the Charismatic Movement in the Archdiocese of Newark and many other ministries. When the couple moved to Trenton, they became members of the city’s St. Joseph Parish. Mrs. Laó Ramos enjoyed sewing, prayer and spending quality time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Laó Ramos is predeceased by her parents; husband Abraham Laó; brother Guillermo Ramos, and son-in-law Michael Collins. She is survived by children Marlene and Kelvin Laó (Josefina); grandchildren Kelvin (Chiara), Jose (Lachelle), Anamaria (Josh), Mariana (Erica), Eric, and Abraham; great grandchildren Samantha “Sammy” Murillo and Jose Alberto Laó, Jr., as well as many other family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton, 383 West State St., Trenton, NJ 08607, or online via catholiccharitiestrenton.org; or St. Joseph Church, 540 N. Olden Ave. Trenton, NJ 08618.
