Guadalupe Torches, newly blessed and lit, begin journey to parishes around the Diocese

In anticipation of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, parishes around the Diocese will once again participate in a series of traveling torch lightings, or “Las Antorchas Guadalupanas,” during the month of November, which will culminate in a diocesan-wide pilgrimage celebration in Lakewood.
Unity in faith is one of the main ideas behind the celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe, the “patroness of the Americas” who appeared in 1531 in Mexico to the peasant Juan Diego, working a miracle through him that helped unite Latinos and has converted millions to Catholicism ever since.

Now in its sixth year, the annual celebration of Las Antorchas Guadalupanas, Torches of Our Lady of Guadalupe for 2021 began during a Mass celebrated Oct. 30 in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. During the Mass, the 18 Torches were lit and the torch captains, who were in attendance, received a blessing.
On Dec. 4, the Torches will be reunited in Lakewood and will be prominently featured in the diocesan-wide pilgrimage through the streets of the Ocean County Town. Hosted by Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, the pilgrimage and closing Guadalupe Mass will take place at two of the new parish’s worship sites. Gathering at St. Mary of the Lake Church, the faithful will begin their Guadalupe pilgrimage at 9 a.m. and walk close to three miles – accompanied by songs of serenade, multilingual praying of the Rosary and camaraderie – to the Chapel of the Holy Family for Mass and fellowship. The Torches will be announced as they are brought into Holy Family Chapel at 11:45 a.m. with Mass beginning soon after at 12 p.m.
