The yearlong online video series that St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, is presenting on “The Titles of St. Joseph” has reached the half-way point. And in taking a pulse check on how the monthly series has been received to date, Msgr. Sam Sirianni, rector, considers it a success.

“It seems to be going well,” he said.

The series, which started in January as part of the Co-Cathedral’s observance of the Year of St. Joseph, focuses on the various titles and attributes of St. Joseph, who is the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, foster father of Jesus and patron of the Universal Church. Among the titles of Joseph that Msgr. Sirianni, Father Brian Butch, parochial vicar, and Jen Schlameuss, pastoral associate, have explored since January have included “St. Joseph the Man;” “Husband of Mary;” “The Feast of St. Joseph;” “Patron of House of Buyers and Sellers;” “St. Joseph the Worker,” and “Patron of Immigrants.”

When possible, the topics were scheduled to correlate to a particular observance of St. Joseph taking place in a given month, Msgr. Sirianni said. One example he noted was the March session on “The Feast of St. Joseph,” which was to correspond with March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Another example was the May presentation on “St. Joseph the Worker,” which corresponded with the May 1 Solemnity.

Msgr. Sirianni chuckled when speaking about the April presentation on Joseph being the patron of house buyers and sellers, saying that was an example “where we tried to downplay” the exaggerated legend of burying a statue of St. Joseph upside down, which many people adopt when they are trying to sell a house. Instead, he said, the presentation focused on how the tradition to bury a statue of St. Joseph evolved hundreds of years ago when a group of nuns in Europe needed to expand their property. The nuns originally buried St. Joseph medals with the hope that their devotion would lead to an answered prayer. The tradition, somewhere along the line, went from burying medals to burying statues.

Though the series takes a break for the month of July, Msgr. Sirianni said he and his staff look forward to starting with the second half in August. The topics, moving forward will be: Aug. 10, Patron of Travelers; Sept. 17, Patron of Families; Oct. 12, Patron of Social Justice; Nov. 9, Patron of the Dying/Happy Death, and Dec. 14, Patron of Expectant Mothers. All of the presentations begin at 11 a.m. and may be viewed on the Co-Cathedral’s YouTube and Facebook pages or through the parish website at www.strobert.com.

When watching the presentations, Msgr. Sirianni said he hopes viewers would “discover how important St. Joseph is to the life of the Church and that they would foster a deeper devotion to him.

“It’s a nice way of observing the Year of St. Joseph,” he said.
