Responding to the need for prayer amid the coronavirus pandemic, a notable actor/singer who attributes personal healing to St. Pio of Pietrelcina has teamed with several organizations on a musical fundraiser in his name.

Robert Davi, known for more than 160 screen roles, recorded the song “Meraviglioso” – meaning “wonderful” – to benefit the Saint Pio Foundation. Experiencing a miraculous recovery as a young man after his mother and family friends made contact with then-Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, Davi told Aleteia.org, “Through all my life, he has been a guide, a light, and I hope he can do the same for all of you out there.” Davi joined the foundation in 2015 as a good will ambassador.

“Meraviglioso,” first recorded in 1968 by singer/songwriter Domenico Modugno, tells the story of a man in deep despair, on the brink of jumping from a bridge.

“He gets stopped by an angel with human appearance, who convinces the man not to commit suicide, but just look around instead, to see all the beauty that the world has to offer,” the Saint Pio Foundation explained in a press release. “Pain and sorrow are part of that, too. The song is therefore a perfect hymn to life and faith.”

Davi was joined by Italian American producer Lee Curreri, and the music project was produced by Luciano Entertainment, with support from the Italian American Podcast, and the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America and sons of Italy Foundation.

“As we faced and continue to face so many challenges during these times, I thought that it was just fitting to record this song,” said Davi, “and to support at the same time the Saint Pio Foundation, which promotes the legacy of Padre Pio, a Saint so dear to me ... Perhaps Padre Pio himself guided me to this song, as it is interesting to note that Modugno first performed it in 1968, the same year Padre Pio left this earth.”

“Meraviglioso,” is available in an mp3 format at $1 per download via the Saint Pio Foundation’s website. The Saint Pio Foundation is a national charitable organization that promotes the teachings and legacy of St. Pio of Pietrelcina. The full proceeds will be donated to the foundation.
