Holy Cross Father Vincent Coppola, who served as parochial vicar of St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish, Lavallette, and Sacred Heart Parish, Bay Head, died Oct. 2 in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia following a lengthy illness. He was 57.

Funeral services will be held Oct 8 in St. Joseph Church, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., serving as principal celebrant and homilist. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, seating in church is limited to 250 people. However, the Mass will be livestreamed on the parish Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StJoesParishTR.

Born in 1963 in Elmhurst, N.Y., Father Coppola earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Queens College and a master’s degree in theology from Moreau Seminary of Notre Dame University, South Bend., Ind. He made his first profession of vows as a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross July 19, 1997; made final profession of vows Sept. 23, 2000, and was ordained a priest June 9, 2001.

Prior to his arrival to the Diocese of Trenton, Father Coppola served numerous assignments including as parochial vicar of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Parish, Bennington, Vt.; as pastor of St. Brigid Parish and St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, both West Rutland, Vt., and as administrator and then pastor of Holy Cross Parish, South Bend, Ind.

In the Trenton Diocese, he was parochial vicar of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Toms River, before he was named to St. Pio of Pietrelcina and Sacred Heart Parishes in July.

An additional post Father Coppola held was serving as a board member of Ave Maria Press.

Father Coppola was predeceased by his grandmother, Rose Ferrigno, and stepfather, Raymond Mooney. He is survived by his mother, Madeline Mooney, two brothers, Michael (Christine) and Thomas; a sister Barbara (Robert) Devine and close friend, Mary Nemeth.

Burial will be in the Holy Cross Community Center at Stonehill College, North Easton, Mass.
