Keeping The Feast: Hispanic take on lentil soup for the Lenten table
March 9, 2020 at 6:33 p.m.
One of the truly special aspects of writing for The Monitor is getting to break bread with so many of the Diocese’s faithful at parish socials, festivals and other gatherings. At these events, the message of Church universal comes through with grace and clarity as so many cultural traditions meld with our faith.
One of many such memorable gatherings took place in December at St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, when some 1,000 Catholics from around the Diocese came together for the arrival of “Las Antorchas Guadalupanas” – the Our Lady of Guadalupe torch procession.
The procession from Trenton’s St. Joseph Parish to the Cathedral was followed by Mass and a festive social, where the buffet featured a wide variety of Latino foods.
Thoughts of that afternoon surfaced as Lent approached. They made me want to create a dish with flavor that would dovetail with this holy time. Seeking insight from Latino friends and, of course, the Internet, it wasn’t long before Sopa de Lentejas (Lentil Soup) emerged as the clear favorite.
Versions of this classic soup from all over Mexico, Central and South America appeared, with one acquaintance even sending his mother’s recipe from Spain. The resulting meatless recipe is an adaptation gleaned from several traditions. It’s easy to make, healthy, economical and flavorful.
Like a number of the recipes I poured over, it includes lime wedges, which add a piquant zest to the soup, and hot sauce for spice. The soup is substantial enough to stand alone with crusty bread for lunch or to serve at supper with salad and a light sandwich.
Table Blessing
Lord Jesus, through the hardship of the Cross, you give us peace; through the pain of the Cross, you heal our wounds. As we make our way through the mystery of your passion, fortify us not only with the food we share but through the love we have for one another and you, in whose name we pray.
