One Middletown parish community is welcoming back a famous friend with music and fellowship this Lent.

St. Mary Parish will host an evening of Irish music and more by famed tenor Emmet Cahill – with a little help from the parish adult and children’s choirs – at 7:30 p.m. March 13 in the church.

Cahill, who was classically trained in opera at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and now tours with the PBS Irish music group Celtic Thunder, will sing a diverse repertoire of traditional Irish songs, Broadway show tunes, sacred hymns and other favorites. He will be joined by the choirs in a special performance of a pro-life song.

“March is the month of life, and it has inspired us,” said Malena Towers, parish music director. “The song ‘Gloria, The Gift of Life’ is from Andrea Bocelli’s album ‘Si’ (Yes) and traces the life of a person from their birth to their wedding.”

Towers, an opera singer who earned a master’s degree in opera from Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, has been holding extra practices to prepare the parish choirs’ 50 adults and 25 children for the concert. In addition to performing the “Gloria,” the evening also will feature the adult choir joining Cahill to sing Verdi’s “La Traviata” in Italian, while the children’s choir will offer selections from the Broadway show “Annie” and the movie “The Sound of Music.”

Also planned is Cahill’s signature song request medley and audience sing-along.

“We are looking forward to building upon the choirs’ demanding Christmas music season and going deeper into this musical challenge,” Towers said. “We need a big vision on how to impact the community, show them the importance of faith and that life is beautiful and unique.”

This is Cahill’s third appearance in the parish. In March 2018, he visited during a snowstorm – a show that still drew 400 despite the weather.

General admission tickets are $30, and a limited number of meet-and-greet plus concert tickets are available for $45. Purchase tickets at emmetcahill.com/tour-dates, at the church in advance or at the door on the night of the performance. St. Mary Church is located at 19 Cherry Tree Farm Road, Middletown.
