Mercer County parishes uphold Station Church tradition during Lent

March 8, 2020 at 10:01 p.m.

Every year during Lent, Catholics living in Rome made an ancient pilgrimage to the basilicas and churches located throughout the city. A different “station church” was designated each day for Catholics from around the city to gather for Mass early in the morning as a visible reminder of the unity of the Church.

This Lenten season, Catholic parishes in Mercer County are once again adapting the Roman tradition that traces its roots as far back as the late second and early third century, by inviting others to visit their churches and celebrate evening Mass. After Mass, some parishes may choose to give tours or  host presentations on their histories.

The Station Church pilgrimage began March 2 in St. Gregory the Great Church, 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square. It will conclude with the Chrism Mass to be celebrated April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold.

The schedule of Masses in the other participating churches include:

March 9, 7:30 p.m., St. George, 1370 River Road, Titusville

March 10, 7:30 p.m., St. Alphonsus Church, 54 East Prospect Street, Hopewell

March 17, noon, St. James Church, 115 E. Delaware Ave., Pennington.  The Mass for the Feast of St. Patrick, will be celebrated in Irish by Msgr. Michael Walsh, pastor. A reception will immediately follow.

March 18, 7 p.m., Sacred Heart Church, 343 South Broad St., Trenton

March 24, 5:30 p.m., St. Paul Church, 216 Nassau St., Princeton

March 30, 7 p.m., St. David the King Church, 1 New Village Road, Princeton Junction.
