In 1979, he became a hospital chaplain in Pittsburgh where he ministered to those in need for six years. In 1985, he was chosen to lead the Divine Word community in Techny as rector, an opportunity that afforded him to search for innovative ways to care for the retired and infirmed priests and brothers.
Upon completing two terms as rector, he returned to Pittsburgh where he served another six years as a hospital and prison chaplain, followed by another return to Techny to work in the infirmary.
