From Staff Reports

Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a letter Aug. 12 to his fellow bishops regarding the Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut.

In the correspondence, he asks for continued prayers, support, fasting and advocacy for “our brothers and sisters.” More than 200 people were killed, 7,000 injured and some 300,000 left homeless by the explosion that rocked Lebanon’s capital.

“We continue to join the Holy Father’s prayer that Lebanon may ‘overcome the grave crisis they are experiencing’ and implore the intercession of Our Lady of Lebanon to bring peace, comfort, and strength to all in need of those graces,” he says in the memo, which also encourages the faithful to “consider how you might respond.”
