Funeral services will be held Nov 6 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Kathleen Tobin who died Oct 31. She was 102.

The former Sister Olivera Joseph was born in Ballingarry, Ireland, and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 78 years. She entered the congregation in 1938 and professed her vows in 1942.

Ministering primarily in elementary education, local house ministry and parish ministry, Sister Kathleen served for 57 years in the Trenton Diocese, 37 of which were in St. Rose of Lima Parish, Freehold. In her early years there, she taught in the parish school and in later years taught remedial reading and also served as a cook and a parish volunteer. She also taught in St. Anthony School, Hamilton; Immaculate Conception School, Trenton, and St. Michael Orphanage, Hopewell.

Sister Kathleen had also ministered in the Dioceses of Harrisburg and Wilmington as well as in Maryland and Oklahoma. In 2011, she moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence, where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.

Sister Kathleen’s Nov. 6 funeral services will begin with a Christian wake service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston. Assisi House is located at 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pa.

She is survived by two nieces and her Franciscan family.
