Faith community aiding homeless with craft fair

More than a dozen years ago, St. Dominic parishioner Marie Salvato and the parish’s Deacon Gerald Reidinger made monthly visits to the roughly 120 homeless in Lakewood’s Tent City.
“We got to know them very well, and they were lovely,” Salvato recalled. The duo worked alongside Minister Steve Brigham of the Lakewood Outreach Ministry Church to offer clothing and needed supplies to those less fortunate.
When the camp was forced to close in July 2015, some homeless took up residence in tents off Route 9 in Howell, Salvato remembered. “Then, [this year], they were banished from there. Now they are all over,” she said.
With an eye on how to help, the Brick faith community, with the encouragement of parish pastor Father Brian Woodrow, will be offering numerous items created by parishioners for sale at a parish craft fair Nov. 10. The event will feature whimsical mailboxes crafted by homeless workers at the First Impression Mailbox Design and Installation company. All proceeds will be donated to area homeless.
“The situation in New Jersey is very bad for homeless,” Salvato added sadly. “There are a lot of animal shelters, but not enough shelters for people.”
The St. Dominic Parish craft sale is Nov. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the church lobby at 250 Squan Road, Brick. For more information, contact the church at 732-840-1410.
