Wireless computer lab provided in St. Paul School

St. Paul’s School, Burlington, held a ribbon cutting ceremony April 8 for its new 25-monitor computer lab that uses an innovative central server system.

Through technology provided by NComputing, Inc., the 25 monitors operate from one server by way of a wireless mechanism on the monitors, explained principal, Bill Robbins. In addition, the lab uses Google Docs to share documents.

The PTA raised about $25,000, mainly through their annual casino fundraiser, for the lab which serves all 175 students in the pre-k through eighth grade school.

Robbins said the lab is being used for various projects in many different classes, not just computer class.

“We have a computer lab so we can demonstrate to the kids and help them with the different processes they need to know to access a computer, so they can learn,” he said.

A teacher may come up with a project, and coordinate with the computer teacher, Kelly Meyer, and work on those projects in the computer lab, he explained.

“Computers are a tool to an end, not an end unto themselves, but in this modern day and age we have to make sure our kids are capable on computers.

When they leave here they’re going to have to know about new technologies in high school, college and whatever job they choose to take,” he added. “So it’s really another part of their education.”
