Virginia Weitz celebrates 50 years of service in Missions Office

Virginia Weitz, whose ministry in the diocesan Missions Office spans six directors and five decades, was feted during a Mass celebrated Jan. 11 in St. Charles Borromeo Church, Cinnaminson. Father Peter James Alindogan, pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, was principal celebrant of the Mass. Concelebrants were Father Joselito Noche, pastor, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Hainesport, and Msgr. Richard Behl, director of the Metuchen Diocese Missions office.
Father Alindogan, newly appointed director of the Pontifical Mission Society for the diocese, noted Weitz’s dedication and longevity over her half-century of service.
“I don’t know anyone who has given 50 years of their life in service for the missions. But Ginny has. She has made it her mission in life to be of service to others,” said Father Alindogan.
At the conclusion of the Mass attended by family, friends and colleagues, Weitz, a resident of Yardville and currently assistant director of finance for the office, was presented with an apostolic blessing.
The celebration of Weitz’s long service was continued after Mass at a dinner held in the Riverton Country Club, also in Cinnaminson, during which she was presented with congratulatory letters from Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., and the Society for the Propagation of the Faith national office.
During her remarks, Weitz recalled three highlights of her long career with the Missions office. She spoke of traveling to Mexico City with Msgr. Richard Tofani, who served as diocesan missions director from 1986 until his unexpected death last Aug. 29. In Mexico City, she had the opportunity to visit orphanages and it was in the girls’ orphanage that I remember one little girl that I picked up. She clung to me; I didn’t want to let her go.”
Weitz also relished a meeting near the beginning of her long career with Blessed Fulton Sheen and his presentation to her of an autographed book, and a private audience with Blessed John Paul II during a visit to Rome many years later. She chuckled when she was reminded that, in a past interview, she would aim for 50 years of service. “Well, I’m still working,” she noted.
