'Via Lucis' pastoral care workshop slated

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice of Marlton has scheduled its eight annual “Now and at the Hour of Our Death” pastoral care workshop for Oct. 18 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the St. John of God Community Services Campus, Westville. Sponsored in part by the Dioceses of Trenton and Camden, the workshop is intended for all those who minister to Catholic patients with serious illness when cure is not possible, including clergy and religious, healthcare practitioners, caregivers, deacons, lay ecclesial ministers and parish volunteers.

The workshop will offer two 75-minute presentations on topics integral to journeying with the suffering. Guest speaker Father Francis Berna will discuss “Rituals of Healing and Dying,” the difficult but privileged opportunity to encounter the holy in sacraments and rituals in the midst of human illness and death. Father Berna, who serves as director of the Master of Arts and Doctor of Theology programs at La Salle University, Philadelphia, will explore the three rituals of the Sacrament of the Sick, Viaticum and Prayers for the Dying and discuss how to incorporate family members and other caregivers into these rituals.

Presenter Marge McGinley, pastoral administrator in Sacred Heart Parish, Mount Holly, will offer her insights on “Finding Blessing and Hope in Suffering.” McGinley, a hospital chaplain who holds a certificate in ministry to the bereaved from the Archdiocese of New York and one in parish administration from the Diocese of Trenton, will teach and demonstrate how family members and caregivers can have different responses to patients depending upon their level of spirituality and openness to the sacraments.

Cost of the workshop is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Registration includes continental breakfast and begins at 8 a.m. To register, send a check or credit card information, including name, address, telephone and email, to Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, N.J. 08053, Attn. Christine Alston. To pay online, see samaritannj.org/via-lucis-2014-workshop. For further information, contact Christine Alston at [email protected], or call 856-552-3258.
