Veterans program family education series begins Jan. 25

Catholic Charities Veterans’ Counseling Program will sponsor a series of weekly presentations on topics affecting military families including the impact of deployment, returning from combat and combat-related stress. The sessions will be offered on Saturdays beginning Jan. 25 at 11. a.m. and will be held in the DARE NJ offices located at 202 Davis Station Rd., Imlaystown (Cream Ridge). There is no charge to attend the presentations and participants are welcome to join the series at any point.
Topics, in the order of presentation, will be: Stages of Deployment; Emotional Cycle of Deployment; Issues Families Face When the Military Deploys; Supporting Your Child through Deployment; Combat-Related Stress Reactions: What Service members and Families Need to Know; Post Combat Risk Taking Behaviors; Helping Children Cope with Post-Traumatic Deployment Issues; Supporting the Bereaved at Home and Downrange; Survivors Guilt; Return and Reunion Workshop for Spouses.
Presenter will be Robert F. Smith, LSW, CADC. Smith is a master’s level licensed therapist who has a private practice in Pennsylvania. A former Vietnam combat veteran who served three tours of duty in Southeast Asia, Smith also worked for three years as a Military and Family Life Consultant (MFLC) on 14 military bases serving the Army, Navy and Air Force both Regular as well as Guard and Reserve Units. During his time as an MFLC, he worked with service members and their families on many complex and delicate issues such as deployment, reintegration, family and relationship issues. He also worked in numerous child development centers helping the children of Service members with developmental and behavioral issues.
Smith also serves as the counselor with the Veterans Counseling Program established by Catholic Charities in 2013 to provide a confidential treatment and support service to military service members and their families.
