Our Lady of the Pines Council, Knights of Columbus, was among numerous parishes, schools and organizations from around the Diocese to conduct a prayer service in honor of Veterans Day on or about Nov. 11.
The occasion to recognize veterans, said Deacon Gerry Purcell of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Whiting, “brings people together, offers a prayer for all who have served and are serving, and shows appreciation of all who sacrificed so much so we have freedom we have today.”

The parish’s Veterans Day observance was held in a garden that contained a memorial etched with the message, “In grateful appreciation to all those who protect and serve our country.” Among those in attendance were veterans, Girl Scouts, parishioners and community members.
Reflecting upon military service, James Fogarty, a Knight and veteran of the 101st Airborne, said, “There’s no glory in combat. It’s a necessary evil. Thank God for the men and women we have today volunteering for deployment.”
Grand Knight James Schiller said, “We should always remember, never forget the sacrifice of our veterans and current service members – what they are going through – and to help and honor them in any way we can.”
