Upper Room's 19th annual conference to focus on 'Everyday Epiphanies'

The Upper Room Spiritual Center, Neptune, will hold its 19th annual Spirituality Conference “Everyday Epiphanies! Finding a Seeking God in the Ordinary and Near At Hand” 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 in Georgian Court University, Lakewood. 

The day will begin with registration, 8:30 a.m. with a welcome and prayer service at 9 a.m.

Featured guest speaker, Notre Dame Sister Melannie Svoboda, will present, “Biblical Wonder:  The Basic Stance for our Spiritual Life” in the morning session at 9:30 a.m. and “Biblical Hospitality:  Welcoming God into our Life” in the afternoon session at 2:30 p.m.  Sister Melannie is a national speaker at conferences, parish missions and retreats, and is a poet, writer and author of more than ten books including “Traits of a Healthy Spirituality” and “When the Rain Speaks.”

Each participant will choose one of three workshops offered at 11 a.m.  The first workshop titled “Pope Francis” will include quick historical look at the papacy, followed by a reflection on the election of Pope Francis on March 13, 2013.  Presenter will be Father Bill Bausch, former pastor of St. Mary Parish, Colts Neck, who is now serving the wider Church through his writings, lectures and workshops.  The second workshop choice, “Evangelization, Liturgy and Discipleship,” presented by Father Garry Koch, parochial vicar, St. Joseph Parish, Toms River, and author of “The Word” column in The Monitor, the Diocesan newspaper, will unpack the terms of evangelization, liturgy and discipleship and how they relate to the Mass and connect all of this to the Eucharistic Liturgy.  The third workshop, “Peace Be with You – and Also a Healthy Dose of Agitation,” will explore the meaning of inner peace and suggest some ways for finding peace in a world that is sometimes hectic, messy or disturbing.  Presenter will be Sister Melannie. A concert at 1:30 p.m. will be under the direction of Jack Hudak, St. Justin the Martyr Parish, Toms River.

The cost is $65 to $85 (sliding scale), $5 late fee after Nov. 3. A box lunch is available for an additional $8.
