July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
The Mount Carmel Guild of Trenton will honor six Catholic women for their service to the community during its 19th annual gala Oct. 17 from 6-10 p.m. in the Trenton Country Club, 201 Sullivan Way, West Trenton.
This year’s program will continue a tradition of honoring women who have dedicated themselves to serving their local communities in a variety of ways. The 2014 honorees are Dorothy Conway, business manager, St. John Parish, Allentown; Filippini Sister Lillian Harrington, president of Villa Victoria Academy, Ewing; Kelly Keifer, co-chair of the Mount Carmel Committee, St. James Parish, Pennington; Teresa Knipper, founder and chairperson of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, St. Paul Parish, Princeton; Mary Lincoln, a volunteer, Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Ewing; Betty Poland, family carnival chairperson, St. Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton Square, and Susan Prusan, co-chair of the Mount Carmel Committee, St. James Parish, Pennington.
While each honoree represents a distinct personal and professional background, each has made it a priority to contribute time and resources to a variety of community organizations in need.
The gala will consist of a dinner and silent auction, with proceeds supporting the Guild’s programs serving those most in need in the community. Honorees will receive a plaque and medal.
Tickets are $150 per person, and guests should make reservations by Oct. 3. The attire for the gala is business casual.
The Mount Carmel Guild, a Trenton-based diocesan social services agency, provides assistance primarily through its Emergency Assistance Program and Home Health Nursing Program.
According to its website, the Emergency Assistance component of the guild’s work includes the provision of emergency food to nearly 8,000 families each year, providing support to some 17,000 household members. While some clients are experiencing homelessness, many low-income clients include seniors and the disabled who are living on fixed incomes. Clients are referred to the Guild from a number of Mercer County agencies, and staff members assess needs of each family on an individual basis.
The Home Health Nursing Program provides in-home nursing services to seniors whose Medicare insurance has been exhausted, and are left with no alternative care. Clients include the homebound with geriatric diseases like diabetes, hypertension, lung and heart disease, stroke, cancer, neuromuscular disorders and arthritis. Most are able to move with the assistance of a cane or walker, and some use wheelchairs. The care of Mount Carmel Guild nurses allows clients to remain comfortable in their own homes while receiving necessary medical care and attention.
