Young Diocese of Trenton sharpshooters dominated a field from all five New Jersey Catholic dioceses by scoring tops in five of 12 divisions in the annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Tournament state finals held April 8 in the Our Lady of Peace Parish Center, Fords.

Boy and girl winners ages 9 to 14 from the diocesan-level competition, held March 31 in Holy Family Parish, Lakewood, joined others from around the state to vie for the trophy in their age and gender divisions. Each received 25 attempts to sink a basketball from the foul line and achieve statewide honors.

Joseph Troiano of St. James Parish, Pennington, sank 23 baskets to win the 9-year-old boy division, while Evangeline Leung, a parishioner in St. Gabriel, Marlboro, clinched the 10-year-old girl trophy for her 22 successful attempts.

The 13-year-old division was clinched by two Trenton Diocese competitors. Mary Huegel of St. Benedict Parish, Holmdel, made 21 shots, while Christopher Sayak of St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, tied another competitor at 20 in the first round, but made an additional five baskets in the shootout to clinch the competition.

Zachary Matthews of St. Mary Parish, Bordentown, took home the 14-year-old boys title with 23 baskets.
