Mission society recognizes diocese’s work
The Monitor received six Catholic Press Awards during the Catholic Media Conference held in Denver June 19 to 21. The awards recognized work published in The Monitor in 2012, ranging from editorial and spiritual commentary, coverage of the Diocesan Youth Conference and the diocese’s Eucharistic Congress, and publishing of the special College Guide supplement.
Msgr. Richard L. Tofani, diocesan director of the Propagation of the Faith, also was honored during the conference for his writing on mission work to the West African country of Benin, which was published in The Monitor.
The CPA presented three First Place awards to The Monitor:
Best Regular Special Supplement for coverage of the Diocesan Youth Celebration: “FAITHBOOK” produced by The Monitor’s editorial and production staffs and freelance writers, photographers and designers. The supplement’s title “FAITHBOOK” picked up on the theme used by the organizers of the 2012 DYC, which was a faith-based take on the popular social network Facebook.
The judges commented: Great concept carried out throughout the section. Nice cover and interior design. Sense of fun throughout this section that WILL be read by youth.
Best Regular Column on Scripture to Mary Morrell for her column published monthly in The Monitor entitled “Things My Father Taught Me.” Morrell, a long-time Catholic writer whose column is published in several diocesan newspapers, is the managing editor of The Monitor. The judges said of her work: Good, compelling writing. Variety of topics. Writes with compassion and clarity.
Best Editorial on a National or International Issue (1-17,000 circulation) for Rayanne Bennett’s op/ed titled “Remembering Rwanda.” Written as a Monitor Editorial, the piece used the 30th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Kibeho, which was a feature story in Jan. 20 issue, to call attention to the nearly forgotten Rwandan Holocaust. Bennett is the associate publisher of The Monitor, and executive director of communications for the Diocese of Trenton.
The judges stated: Great storytelling. A history too-little heard and too-quickly forgotten; brought to the forefront with good reporting.
The Monitor received Third Place for Best Special Supplement with Advertising Emphasis for its Guide to Catholic Colleges and Universities produced by the newspaper’s business, editorial and production staffs.
The judges observed: Strikes a balance between the broader view of Catholic higher education and its importance with spotlights on individual schools, which together provides a great deal of insight.
Two Honorable Mentions were given for The Monitor’s special coverage of the Eucharistic Congress held at the start of the Year of Faith. Titled “This Is Our Faith,” the package was published in mid-October, 2012 and recapped the historic three-day event hosted by the Diocese of Trenton. The special edition’s 32 pages were the culmination of a team of staff and freelance writers and photographers, who filed their photos and stories from a media center on location at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel.
“This Is Our Faith,” received the Honorable Mention designation for Best One-time Special Issue and Best Multiple Picture Package Originating with the Newspaper.
In recognizing the overall issue, the judges commented: Engaging layouts that pull the reader in. Nice touch to highlight web-only features.
The photo package drew this comment from the judges: Nice web design and fun photos.
The First Place Archbishop Edward T. O’Meara Award was presented to Msgr. Richard Tofani and The Monitor in the category of “Single Article” – for the piece written by Msgr. Tofani and produced by The Monitor’s editorial and production staffs entitled “The Catholic Church in Benin: Carrying a Message of Hope.” The award was presented by The Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States.
