Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, announced that faculty members, Anna Carella and Julie Kopchik have been named Teachers of the Year.

Carella, a resident of Mercerville, and a world language teacher, was nominated by students, who praised her as “a compassionate teacher,” who cares about the success and self esteem of each student.

An alum wrote that. Carella “changed her life” by believing in her. As teacher of Italian, she has impacted many students during her five years in Notre Dame. She has been involved in various co-curricular activities including boys and girls swimming and the Italian Club.

Carella is married to Notre Dame alumnus, Paul Carella who graduated in 1981.

Kopchik is a resident of Burlington and has been a mathematics teacher in Notre Dame for 11 years. One nominating colleague remarked on how Kopchik “instills a love of math in many ND students, using art, technology and real-life learning to make lessons more relevant and interesting.”

“She prepares students to be the problem solvers and leaders of tomorrow.” She has taught almost all the math courses offered in Notre Dame at the regular and honors level, including Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II and pre-calculus. Having previously coached junior varsity girls basketball, Kopchik currently is moderator for the math league and serves on the school’s personnel committee.

The ND Teachers of the Year were announced during the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon which was sponsored by the Notre Dame Parent Teachers Association.
