Students from five diocesan schools tested their athletic prowess at the 52nd Annual Mercer County CYO Track and Field Meet held June 2 at Notre Dame High School, Trenton. Competitors from Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton; St. Ann, Lawrenceville; St. Paul, Princeton; St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton; and St. Mary, Bordentown, competed in both traditional and uniquely-tailored events designed to evoke both personal pride and team school spirit.
Boys and girls from grades 6 through 8 ran team and individual dashes and relays of varying metrical lengths, stretched during the long jump contest and thrust the shot put as in traditional track and field competitions. More child-friendly events such as baseball, softball and football throwing, soccer kicks, and a jump rope competition were substituted for the javelin toss and hurdles.
Trenton Catholic Academy girls cinched one individual and three team records at the annual grammar school competition. Cheri Kargbo set a new record in the girls varsity 200-meter dash with a time of 29.5 seconds, 1.1 seconds faster than the previous mark. The girls varsity 400 meter relay team set a new time of 57.4 seconds, besting the previous record by a scant one-tenth of a second.
Junior varsity runners from TCA also inked their names in the record book. The 4x50 shuttle relay team ties the previous record of 29.3 seconds, while the junior varsity 400 meter relay team bested the previous record of 1:00.8 by 3/10s.
A number of new events were added to the meet this year. Varsity level teams ran longer sprint medley races with legs measuring 100, 100, 200 and 400 meters; the boys and girls of TCA notched times of 2:00.3 and 2:21.5 in this event respectively.
A 1600 meter run was held for all four divisions; St. Paul’s junior varsity runners set the pace at 7:06 for the girls and 6:18 for the boys, while TCA’s varsity girls (7:09.6) and varsity boys (5:33.0) inked the records in the run’s inaugural year.
Final overall team scores were: Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, 199 points; St. Ann, Lawrenceville, 113 points; St. Paul, Princeton, 92 points; St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton, 41 points; St. Mary, Bordentown, 40 points.
