The St. Mary of the Lakes Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will name its Caring Center in honor of Msgr. James H. Dubell, pastor of St. Mary of the Lakes Parish, Medford, during a ceremony April 18.
“Msgr. Dubell has been instrumental in helping the society to provide person-to-person service to those in need in our area,” said conference president Dr. James Dwyer. “This is our way of saying thank you and letting the community know how important Msgr. Dubell’s support has been to our work.” Msgr. Dubell is celebrating his 50th anniversary of priesthood this year.
The center, located at 1 Jones Road, Medford, includes private rooms available for consultations with guests and a conference room for visitors to convene. The adjoining food pantry and Thrift Store, which help provide income for the society’s operations, have open aisles with bright lighting and fitting rooms.
“We would never have been able to do all we do for the community without the help of the parishioners of St. Mary of the Lakes,” Dwyer continued. He extolled Msgr. Dubell’s involvement with the society’s efforts. “He has been extremely supportive by encouraging donations of food and contributions to our ministry. Recently he supported the placement of a statue of St. Vincent in the church and blessed it. He is frequently referencing the good work that the conference does in his sermons as an example of ‘servanthood.’ We were able to get the backing of the parish when we secured financing for a large expansion we embarked upon several years ago – again, due to his support.”
Medford’s SVDP society conference has been a ministry of St. Mary of the Lakes Parish since 1980, serving the Burlington County communities of Medford, Medford Lakes, Browns Mills, Pemberton Township and Moorestown. After earning Congressional recognition in 2012, the present complex completed a $1 million renovation, doubling its size to 8,000 square feet.
The SVDP society is a nonprofit, Catholic lay organization of men and women seeking spiritual growth and offering one-to-one service to those in poverty, in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. It is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world.
The St. Mary of the Lakes Conference of the society served more than 5900 adults and children in 2014, assisting with food, clothing and financial help for rent, mortgage, medical expenses and other immediate needs valued at over $434,000, as well as providing spiritual support. This included upwards of 200 home visitations and nearly 700 in food deliveries. For the holidays, more than 500 families received dinner, gifts and candy.
