The phrases “Kids Helping Kids” and “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade,” took on added meaning for the students in the extended day program in St. James School, Red Bank, when they hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser to help benefit childhood cancer research in early May.

The students asked their classmates in Saint James School to contribute a $2 donation and participate in a casual dress day. The after-school program’s 47 students promoted their event by making posters and visiting classrooms where they gave background on the Alex’s Lemonade Stand and how it evolved from a young childhood cancer patient named Alexandra “Alex” Scott.

Children across the country have set up similar lemonade sales in honor of Scott, who died of cancer in 2004 at age eight. Her foundation, Alex's Lemonade Stand, has raised $60 million for cancer research over the past nine years.

In addition, each St. James student also created designed his or her own bright yellow t-shirt with a hand-painted red heart. The dress-down day raised approximately $700, which will be donated to “Alex’s” foundation.

Kathleen Seslar, moderator of the St. James extended day program said, “This is a shining example of one of the pillars that Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is based upon – that you are never too young to make a difference.”
