Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, celebrated a major milestone Oct. 16 as several academic enhancements to the campus were dedicated in a special ceremony.

Bishop Emeritus John M. Smith was the main celebrant of an early morning Mass which set the joyful tone of the day. A moving dedication ceremony featured patriotic renditions by the CBA band as a prelude to the blessing of the cornerstone by Bishop Smith and the preparation and placement of a time capsule. Scores of CBA alumni, friends, parents, faculty, and staff gathered to honor the progress made by the academy and to attend a reception following the ceremony.

The extensive renovations, which cost approximately $6 million according to CBA principal Christian Brother James Butler, include a dramatic new building façade with floor-to-ceiling windows, new administrative offices and conference rooms, a modern guidance suite, a student library, a faculty library, media center, and a science wing with two new laboratories and five new classrooms.

The new construction concludes Phase II of Project 50th, a $23.5 million multiple-phase capital campaign and expansion project designed to ensure that faculty and students have adequate facilities to continue the CBA tradition of academic and athletic excellence.

Project 50th, the cost of which is financed by endowment funds, was appropriately named to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the school in 2009, according to information listed in a campaign brochure.

Phase I, which included the reconstruction of Fleming Hall and the Sprint Barn, was completed in 2009. Phase III, which is only in the planning stages, will include an aquatic center, field house, and expansion of McKay Gymnasium.

Christian Brother Frank Byrne, CBA president and a graduate of the Class of ’75, noted the significance of the expansion extends beyond the actual facilities and honors the legacy of late Christian Brother Andrew O’Gara, the former CBA principal and president. “His desire to grow the endowment fund and to enhance academic and physical opportunities was his master plan,” Brother Frank stated.

Commenting on the reasoning that fueled the expansion, Brother Frank alluded to the explosion of new technology and stated, “Schools must keep ahead of the learning curve. In just the last decade, information and technology has changed so much. If you are going to send your children out into the workforce, they need to know how to find information, digest it, and turn it around. If they cannot do that, they are at a tremendous disadvantage.”

Brother James explained that all improvements were designed to function collaboratively. More importantly, he noted that the academy is not aiming to become larger in size or enrollment, but is instead looking to grow in the capacity to instruct.
