Stanley Szalewicz, liturgical musician and organist

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 21 in St. Paul Church, Princeton, for Stanley Szalewicz, a local parish organist, who died Oct. 18 in the Pavilions at Forrestal Village, Plainsboro. He was 54.

Born in Oil City, Pa., Szalewicz graduated in 1977 from St. Vincent College, Latrobe, Pa., with a degree in sacred music. He also earned a master’s degree in organ performance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master of library science with specialization in music librarianship from Indiana University, Bloomington.

After graduation, he worked at the Online Computer Library Center’s Tech Pro department in Dublin, Ohio, and then at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. He also studied at the Royal School of Church Music, Croyden, England, in 1982.

In 2001, he joined the library faculty at Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Lawrenceville, where he was an associate professor-librarian at Talbott Library in Princeton.

Mr. Szalewicz was a charter member of the Caritas Chamber Chorale and was active in the Trenton Diocesan Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.

Since 2001, he was the organist at the First Presbyterian Church of Plainsboro. He also served as chair of the board of directors of the Capital Singers of Trenton from its inception in July, 2006. He was also an organist in both St. Paul Parish and Incarnation- St. James Parish, Ewing.

Mr. Szalewicz is survived by a sister, three brothers, 10 great nieces and great nephews and a special friend, Nancy Pazolini of Ewing.

Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Incarnation-St. James School, 1555 Pennington Rd., Ewing, N.J. 08618.
