St. Veronica School, Howell, recently honored four alumni by inviting them to a “dinner theater” in the school, with the help of the Knights of Columbus, parishioners and members of the school’s faculty and staff.
The honored alumni were Gregory Player of the Class of 2001, Kim Bressi of the Class of 2004, Kevin Carillo of the Class of 2006 and Susan Schuld of the Class of 2010.
In her opening remarks at the dinner, Resurrection Sister Cherree Power, principal, mentioned that the school’s theme this year is “Shine Like Stars,” and noted that the alumni present do shine like stars and continue to make SVS proud.
Player’s dedication to helping others who are defenseless or in need is what led him to his current position as the captain of the Adelphia Fire Company in Howell. St. Veronica School nourished his leadership skills by giving him the opportunity to serve on the student council when he attended the school.
Player went on to Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, then graduated from Manhattan College as valedictorian with a bachelor degree in civil engineering, then later with a master of science degree, also in civil engineering, in 2012. He is also a Licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey, and is a project engineer for Public Service Energy & Gas. In May he married the love of his life, Jaime.
During her time in SVS, Bressi was always creative, particularly in the area of dance. When the school went through Middle States Re-Accreditation in 2002, she was one of the leaders in dance for the Quilloquium as they presented the project Living the Mission, Implementing Catholic Social Teaching. That was the year the school began its Liturgical Dancers, soon to be known as Spirits of Grace, which Bressi went on to help with the choreography of dances.
After graduating from SVS, Bressi attended the Ocean County Performing Arts Academy and graduated in 2008 as valedictorian. She then went to Point Park University in Pittsburgh, and is now the regional director of the Groove National Dance Competition.
Carillo was always very involved in theater. In the summer before kindergarten, he starred as Oliver in the play “Oliver” in SVS. He also once performed as Tiny Tim in “A Christmas Carol” performance in Madison Square Garden. Carillo wrote in his SVS yearbook, “Life is not a dress rehearsal: LIVE.”
After graduating from SVS, he attended the Freehold Performing Arts Center for acting at Howell High School, graduating in 2010 as valedictorian, and was accepted into the Drama Program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a full merit scholarship. He graduated this year and received a six-month artistic fellowship with Lincoln Center Education in New York City.
Schuld has always been a well-rounded student, especially in the areas of math, dance, drama and athletics. She helped her team win third place in a Christian Brothers Academy math competition, has participated in SVS’s Spirits of Grace, has performed in school plays such as Godspell, and is an avid soccer athlete.
During her four years in St. Rose High School, Belmar, Schuld participated in countless service projects. She has also served as a tutor and mentor, took six advanced placement classes, was salutatorian of the Class of 2014, and was president of the St. Rose chapter of Catholic Athletes for Christ. She also grew spiritually with St. Veronica’s Life Teen group and has served as an altar server.
She will be attending Monmouth University, West Long Branch, in the fall and plans on majoring in secondary education/English. She will also pursue a minor in theater.
After the dinner, the alumni and their families were invited to join the school community’s performance of HONK, a musical adaptation of Ugly Duckling.
