St. Rose School 'Walk for Education' nets $18K for tuition assistance

The community of St. Rose School, Belmar, took hundreds of thousands of dancing, walking, skipping, hopping and determined steps May 10 towards making a Catholic school education a bit more affordable. Their two-mile journey, dubbed the “Walk for Education,” raised more than $18,000 intended for the school’s St. Thomas More scholarship fund, which provides tuition assistance to eligible families.

Staff, teachers and students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade assembled outside the Catholic grammar school as St. Rose principal, Gregory Guito, welcomed them. Msgr. Edward Arnister, pastor of St. Rose Parish, led the group in prayer, then members of the Shoreline Dance Academy, Ocean Grove, kicked off the event with upbeat music and dance steps designed to motivate the young feet. Walkers set out from the Sixth Avenue school to circle nearby Silver Lake, then return, as every step put them closer to surpassing their original goal of $10,000.

Organized by St. Rose marketing department members Travis Semblewski and Jessica Jarmer, pledges for the Walk for Education were made by families, friends, alumni, parishioners and local businesses eager to aid families in need of tuition assistance.

“A Catholic education is a valuable experience that instills the values in our children who become productive and successful adults in the future. Many of our families are fortunate enough to afford such an experience for their children, but not all,” Guito explained. “An equal number of families in our Catholic community would love to offer a Catholic education to their children, but do not have the finances to make it work for them.”

Jarmer, parent to a St. Rose student, said, “When I spoke with the students before the walk, I told them, ‘This makes a difference to people you know, this is important.’  This can help [the families] over the hump and make Catholic schools affordable.”

Guito concluded, “That is why we set up the St. Thomas Moore Fund: to assist families who like to fulfill their dream of providing a Catholic education for their children. That was the premise of our Walk for Education: to help that dream happen for families in our Catholic community.”
