St. Rose of Lima students decorate, donate cakes to Freehold soup kitchen

Students from St. Rose of Lima School, Freehold put their time, treasure and talents in the kitchen to good use to benefit a local soup kitchen. Layer cakes adorned by the young decorators were donated to the town’s Feed All God’s Children, a soup kitchen operated at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Fourth through eighth grade students in a seven-week after school cake decorating class learned to wield pastry bags and spread butter cream, then formed three teams for a Cake Challenge. Students chose frosting designs and worked together to decorate layer cakes from Francesca’s Cakery in Freehold; designs were chosen, pastry bags and spatulas were wielded, and the layer cakes soon sported butter cream and fondant frosting roses, leaves, pumpkins and other sugary decorations.
Six students were chosen to deliver the creations to the lunchtime soup kitchen which serves 40,000 meals each year. “This is … great,” said Tina Jurkewicz, spirituality committee chairperson, “for our children to be directly involved with our community.”
