St. Martha Parish to observe 40th anniversary

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

St. Martha Parish, Point Pleasant, will observe its 40th anniversary July 29. A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at noon by Father Nilo Apura, who became pastor effective July 1. A picnic will follow the Mass.

St. Martha Parish was established July 29, 1972 by Bishop George W. Ahr who appointed Father Henry A. Murphy the founding pastor. The parish was established as a result of Bishop Ahr’s splitting the boundaries of St. Dominic Parish, Brick.

Father Murphy celebrated the parish’s first Mass on June 18, 1972, in the Nellie Bennett School.  Masses were held in that school and the Kings Grant Inn until March 17, 1976. Mass was then celebrated in the building that was used as both a church and parish center.

As the parish expanded, additional rooms were added and the main room was slowly transformed into the parish church. The dedication ceremony of St. Martha Church was held July 29, 1992 with Bishop John C. Reiss presiding.

During the 40th anniversary celebration, parishioners and visiting guests can expect to see the parish’s new banner, as well as a DVD that will feature historical photos.  Anniversary mugs and books will also be available for purchase.
