St. Leo the Great students excel in CBA math contest

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

The team from St. Leo the Great School, Lincroft, placed first among Catholic school competitors in the 42nd annual Brother Christian Jones Eighth Grade Mathematics Contest held Oct. 19 in Christian Brothers Academy.

The competition, named for the long-time head of the CBA mathematics department at the Lincroft secondary school, drew public, private and parochial school teams from around the state.

Eight students per school were challenged to solve 20 multiple-choice pre-algebraic problems in an hour’s time; the top five scores were combined to set the team score. St. Leo the Great students ranked fifth among all competitors, topped only by teams from Oak Hill Academy, Lincroft; Elisabeth Morrow School, Englewood; Ranney
School, Tinton Falls, and the Metuchen diocese’s St. Ambrose, Old Bridge.

Other Catholic school competitors had strong finishes in the annual contest, reported Patrick Melosh, CBA mathematics department head and a student of the late Brother Jones. St.

Catherine, Spring Lake, took home fifth place honors, followed by Holy Cross, Rumson; St. Benedict, Holmdel; St.

Dominic, Brick, and St. Mary, Middletown.

The mathematics acumen of individual students was recognized as well.

St. Leo the Great’s Ryan Alkin ranked fourth overall, followed by Hayden Lang of Holy Cross; Kaitlyn Wood of St. Catherine; Bryan Romanow of St. Dominic; St. Benedict’s Kaleigh Remick, and Samantha La Rochelle of St. Mary.
