St. Elizabeth's 'Communion Closet' aids communicants in need

St. Elizabeth Parish, Avon, is helping its youngest parishioners to say yes to the dress… and suit. The Monmouth county parish has created a “Communion Closet” of gently-worn dresses and suits for families unable to afford a special outfit for their child’s special day.

Parish director of religious education Susan McCullough had noted some families in her parish and others in the area were having difficulty purchasing a new navy blue suit or white dress suitable for wear as their child prepared to receive the Eucharist for the first time. The doting grandmother knew just where to go for help.

“I went to my children and reminded them I had bought my grandchildren their outfits and asked, “do you need them anymore?” McCullough remembered with a laugh. “They told me ‘no’ and were glad to give them back.”

McCullough has created an inventory of outfits in a closet in the rectory and extends an open hand to aid a family in need. “We can certainly share with them,” she noted. “If we can help, that’s what we are going to do.”

The parish will celebrate the Sacrament of First Communion early this May, and McCullough welcomes ongoing donations of dresses or navy blue suits for the future communicants. Donations may be dropped off at the St. Elizabeth rectory at 424 Lincoln Ave., Avon, or sent in with a religious education student on Sunday morning. For any questions, contact Susan at 732-774-4089 x 205.
