St. Benedict Parish celebrates a half-century of education

St. Benedict Parish, Holmdel, will continue the year-long celebration of its school’s golden anniversary with a dinner dance and parish fair Sept. 8 and 9.

“Birthday Bash” events commenced with the celebration of Mass by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., in January. The parish and school is in the midst of a three-year capital campaign to add a multi-purpose building onto the school to better serve the vibrant, growing Catholic community. Fiftieth anniversary celebrations have been slated throughout the remainder of the year with a special focus on embracing past attendees of St. Benedict School.

“We are making a real push to contact alumni of the school,” said Catherine V. Warshaw-Garguilo, parish administrator.  The Holmdel parish has published a newsletter and formed an advancement and alumni affairs committee to find the hundreds of young men and women formed in faith by the Catholic school. “We’d love to hear from them.”

The parish dinner dance will be held in the school cafeteria Sept. 8 following the 5 p.m. Mass. The family-friendly event will feature a deejay, activities for children, a catered dinner and beer and wine for the adults. To celebrate the “Birthday Bash” theme, parishioners may enter a cake baking contest with categories including best tasting, most unique and best decorated; all creations will be served as dessert.

Sept. 9 is the date for the annual parish fair on the grounds of St. Benedict. A giant slide, rock climbing wall and a bungee trampoline will entertain the children, while carnival games and a bocce tournament will offer adult attendees a chance to mingle with their fellow parishioners. Typical fairground food and live entertainment round out the day, as will an eagerly anticipated game of chance: a dunk tank featuring pastor Father Daniel F. Swift on the hot seat. Teachers of St. Benedict will receive a special tribute during the fair.

Upcoming celebrations include a laser tag event and a formal dinner dance for adults. For further information, including ticket prices for both events, contact the parish office of St. Benedict at 732-264-4712. St. Benedict is located at 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel.
