While some prepared for Memorial Day by stocking up on hamburgers and readying the grill, a group of students in St. Aloysius School, Jackson, reflected on the meaning the holiday holds in their lives.
In recognition of the holiday, the American Legion hosted a contest for students in the seventh grade to write essays on the topic of “What Memorial Day Means to Me.”
Representatives from Jackson’s American Legion Post 504 visited the school May 24 for a special ceremony to honor awardees and commemorate the holiday.
The program was held in the Old Church and began when seventh-grader Robert Chojnacki processed in with the American flag and placed it in front of the audience of students, faculty and family members.
Seventh-grader Michael Werthmuller received first-place honors; Ashley Bock took second place and Jasmine Patel came in third in the essay writing competition.
The program also included a coloring contest, with contestants hailing from the fourth and fifth grades.
The first-place winner, Kaitlin Capallupo, also received honors as the second-place winner for the county. Second place in the local contest was awarded to Victoria Fletcher, and Jacob Canderozzi took third.
