Methods for sharing the Good News have come a long way from the day Moses carried tablets down Mount Sinai, and Brittany Wilson aims to be just the woman to demonstrate the best ways to do it.

Wilson joined the diocesan Communications Office June 9 as its new social media coordinator, striving to expand the reach and impact of broadcasting diocesan events and faith-based content over multiple electronic platforms.

“My goal in this position is to get more people in the Diocese connected to social media,” said Wilson. She comes well-equipped to take on the challenge.

A native of Hamilton Square, Wilson, 27, attended its St. Gregory the Great School, then graduated from Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville. She graduated from Penn State University, State College, Pa., in 2009 with degrees in English and journalism, then joined the staff of the York Daily Record, York, Pa.

Over the course of her five years with the media outlet, Wilson served as copy editor, editor of web content and sports editor, and the social media impact of the paper grew under her management. “I wore lots of hats,” she remembered, smiling. “I managed user-generated information on social media, and photos of events we didn’t cover, [because reporters] can’t be everywhere,” Wilson stated.

The creation of the position is in line with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M.’s, initiative to use technology to advance the new evangelization. Wilson will be reporting to Rayanne Bennett, executive director of the Office of Communications. She will also serve as a resource for other Chancery departments, parishes and schools as they expand upon the social media presence already in place via the main diocesan webpage, The Monitor’s site and a number of ministry and community sites such as Respect Life, Realfaith TV and youth-focused sites.

“While the Diocese has had a presence on social media for several years now – particularly through the main diocesan pages, and those for The Monitor – we haven’t had a staff person fully dedicated to developing our use of social media and expanding our platform,” noted Bennett. “So, we are delighted to have Brittany join our team. She has already opened up several new channels of social media interaction, and we’re excited to see what benefit her work will bring to our communications and ministerial work here in the Chancery.”

One of her goals in this new position, Wilson continued, is “to let everyone know what we are doing in the Diocese and get information going.”  She aims to develop a more robust Twitter and Facebook presence, and has created a Pinterest map of churches in the Diocese as well as posted recent graduation promotions and photo galleries to generate traffic to the diocesan website.

Wilson plans to take on the role of teacher as well, sharing her expertise in social media with others in the Chancery. “They can start live Tweeting at events so readers can follow [coverage] live rather than wait for the print or web content to be posted,” she revealed. “They can learn to promote their own work on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.”

Wilson has returned to her roots to live with her family and beloved beagle, Emma, in Hamilton. She smiled when asked to describe an average day in this new multi-media age. Wilson confided, “Every day will be different. We’ll see what’s going on each platform, that’s how you grow. We might be a bit hesitant at first, but, little by little as we learn,” she asserted, “the Diocese should see great results.”
