Winter storm Jonas dominated the news this past weekend and also caused a massive uptick in traffic to the Diocese of Trenton and Trenton Monitor Facebook pages.
A post late Friday morning to both pages regarding a dispensation given by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., from the obligation of Mass Jan. 23 and 24 because of the predicted blizzard conditions, reached tens of thousands of people across our Diocese.
The posts were shared a combined 777 times, amassed 226 likes and reached more than 30,860 people over the course of the weekend. More than 50 people commented on the posts.
Many of those comments thanked Bishop O’Connell for his careful consideration. Others, like this one from Deacon Dewey Raylman of St. Ann Parish, Browns Mills, wished safety upon the fellow faithful: “Hope everyone stays safe and thanks god for the warmth and safety of their homes. Please pass this along.”
A conversation was even started by a woman who identified herself as being non-Catholic. She wanted to know why and when dispensations are granted.
A video of Bishop O’Connell’s homily from the Respect Life Mass he celebrated Jan. 22 also brought a significant amount of traffic to the Diocese of Trenton’s page.
A few of those who attended the Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral even took time to comment on the homily, which was titled “The Answer Is Life”:
Jewel E Brennan: Yes, future King to be David respected the life of Saul who wanted to kill David...another example of respect life - Thank you Bishop O'Connell - it was an awesome liturgy this morning!
Caroline Woodrow: Thank you Bishop O'Connell, for a truly beautiful mass today. The answer is life!
