The Annual Merit Award and Exhibition hosted by the Art Society of Monmouth County honored St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, seniors Jessica Young of Freehold and Joseph Chmura of South River for photos they took.

The Merit Award recognizes students of outstanding ability who will be majoring in art in a school or college of their choice in 2014.  Jessica took the second place prize and Joseph took fourth place in the exhibit.

Jessica was excited to take second prize, “I took this picture while I was in Central Park in NYC,” she said. “I like to take interesting pictures of detail and close-ups. I took this picture because the swirl of the vine got my attention.”

Joseph took fourth prize with a photo taken of his grandfather. “The name of the photo is ‘Frank.’ My grandfather is very old school with his artwork and I use Photoshop to paint. He has been my inspiration to pursue a career in art because of his many years painting signs for the city of Newark. I wanted to portray the peaceful nature of his working environment and make the environment the subject while having him be part of the picture as well.”

Joseph and Jessica will continue working on their art in college. Joseph has been accepted to DeVry University where he will study graphic design and computer programming and Jessica has been accepted to the Rhode Island School of Design.
