A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 17 in the chapel of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, Stella Niagara, N.Y., for Franciscan Sister Nancy Grassia who died Oct. 14. She was 79.

Born in 1936 in Buffalo, N.Y., the former Sister Josette entered the community in Stella Niagara Sept. 5, 1954. She made profession of vows July 2, 1957, and perpetual vows Aug. 18, 1960. She held a bachelor of science degree from Rosary Hill (Daemen) College, Amherset, N.Y., and a master of science in education degree from Niagara University in New York.

In the ministry of education, Sister Nancy served in schools in the Dioceses of Buffalo, Columbus, Ohio, Trenton, Metuchen, Paterson and the Archdiocese of Newark. In the Trenton Diocese, she taught in St. Agnes School, Atlantic Highlands, from 1958-1962; St. Mary School, New Monmouth, from 1962-1964, and also served as principal of St. Mary School from 1967-1972. In addition, she served the Trenton Diocese as an associate superintendent of education from 1973-1986 and as administrative coordinator in Upper Room Spiritual Center, Neptune, from 1990-1992.

Sister Nancy is survived by two sisters and one brother.

Burial was in Stella Niagara University. Memorial donations may be sent to the Sisters of St. Francis, 442 Lower River Rd., Stella Niagara, N.Y., 14144 or Christ the King Prep School, 239 Woodside Ave, Newark, NJ 07104.
