Sister Miriam Malin Craig, a former provincial leader for the Society of the Sacred Heart community and a founder of three Sacred Heart schools died Aug. 20 in Teresian House, Albany, N.Y.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Sept. 6 at 10:45 a.m. in Teresian House.
Born in 1920 in San Antonio, Tex., Sister Miriam entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at the Kentwood Convent in Albany Dec. 8, 1942. She professed her first vows at Kentwood June 3, 1945, and her final vows in the Society of the Sacred Heart motherhouse in Rome Feb. 11, 1951.
Sister Miriam received a bachelor of arts degree in history with a minor in music and philosophy from Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y.
From 1945 to 1988, Sister Miriam served in a variety of roles, both as teacher and administrator in Sacred Heart schools including those in Bethesda, Boston and New York. While treasurer of the Washington, D.C. Province, she oversaw the foundation of both Carrollton in Miami and Stuart Country Day School in Princeton. She served in many capacities within the Society of the Sacred Heart, including multiple terms as provincial treasurer and on two provincial terms for the Washington Province, from 1967-1971 and 1978-1982. She established a house of studies for religious of the Sacred Heart in formation at The Catholic University of America, Washington. She spent six years in Rome, overseeing investments for the society and three years as a staff assistant in the Uganda/Kenya Province.
Sister Miriam is survived by many nieces, nephews, alumnae and former colleagues.
