Sister Maura Parker, longtime GCU instructor

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 21 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Maura Parker who died Nov. 18.

Born in Moorestown, Sister Maura was a former student of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Maple Shade, and Camden Catholic High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1944 and began studies in Georgian Court College (now Georgian Court University), Lakewood. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in Latin and later earned a master of science degree in library science and a master of arts degree in Latin from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.

For more than 40 years, she served on the faculty of Georgian Court University, teaching classical studies, classical mythology and classical civilization. She was also appointed chairperson of the Modern and Classical Languages Department. She also taught in Mount St. Mary Academy, Watchung, and Cathedral High School, Trenton. She retired to McAuley Hall Health Care Center where she spent time in prayer and hospitality.

She is survived by one brother, two sisters, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and the Sisters in the Mid-Atlantic Community.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
