A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 2 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary William O’Brien who died Feb. 26. She was 99.

Sister Mary William entered the Sisters of Mercy community in 1934 and was immediately assigned to St. Mary Academy, Lakewood, where she taught on the primary level and cared for children who boarded the academy.

She held degrees in elementary education and administration and supervision from Georgian Court College (now University), Lakewood, and Villanova University. Over the course of 35 years, she taught in six elementary schools in the Trenton, Metuchen and Camden Dioceses. In the Diocese of Trenton, she served in St. Joseph School, Trenton, and Holy Cross School, Rumson. Other ministries in which she served included as principal and as a coordinator and director of religious education.

Sister Mary William is survived by nieces and nephews and many Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic community.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
