A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 29 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Valerian Kelty who died Aug. 24. She was 89.

Born in Trenton, Sister Mary Valerian graduated from Immaculate Conception School and Cathedral High School, Trenton. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, and a master’s degree in secondary education from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.

The former Cecilia Kelty entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1940. She received her habit and religious name , Sister Mary Valerian, in 1941, and she was perpetually professed  as a Sister of Mercy in 1946.

Sister Mary Valerian ministered for 48 years in schools in the Trenton, Camden, and Metuchen Dioceses. In the Trenton Diocese, she served in St. Paul School, Princeton, from 1941-1942; St. James School, Red Bank, from 1945-1946, and  Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, from 1969-1974.

Sister Mary Valerian is survived by a sister, a brother and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 US Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069
