Sister Mary Testa was Filippini religious for 85 years

Filippini Sister Mary Testa died Dec. 29 in Morristown Medical Center, Morristown, at age 101. Funeral services were held Jan. 2 in the St. Lucy Chapel in Villa Walsh, Morristown. The celebrant and homilist for the funeral Mass was Father Ronald Sordillo, who ministers to the infirm sisters in St. Joseph Hall. Burial was in Ave Maria Cemetery.

Sister Mary was born in Philadelphia and raised in Trenton. A member of St. Joachim Parish, Trenton, she entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1926. She received her habit in 1929, and made her religious profession in 1932. She was awarded a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from the College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown.

Sister Mary taught primary grades in schools in New Jersey, Rhode Island and New York. In the Trenton Diocese, she served in Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Asbury Park, from 1930-1931, and St. James School, Trenton, from 1931-1935.

Sister Mary was known for her summer volunteer work with Villa Walsh Tower Hill Reading Program. Even in retirement she taught remedial reading. She became a resident of St. Joseph Hall Infirmary in 2009.

Sister Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph and Louise (Genovario) Testa and stepdaughter of Frances (Forcina) Testa.  She is survived  by two sisters and a brother and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Memorial donations may be sent to St. Joseph Hall, c/o Sister Ascenza Tizzano, provincial superior, at Villa Walsh, 455 Western Ave., Morristown, N.J. 07960.
