Sister Mary Lavin, was educator in Lakewood and Brick schools

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 5 in St. Dominic Church, Brick, for Mercy Sister Mary Lavin who died Nov. 1 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung. She was 79.

Born in Philadelphia, Sister Mary Lavin (formerly known as Sister Mary Scholastica) entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1950. She held a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, and a master’s degree in guidance from the University of Dayton in Ohio.

Sister Mary Lavin served in a number of schools in New Jersey as a teacher, principal and guidance counselor. In the Diocese of Trenton, she was a teacher, principal and guidance counselor in St. Mary Academy, Lakewood, and was assistant principal and guidance counselor in St. Dominic School, Brick.

Sister Mary Lavin was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Mary Lavin, and her aunt and uncle, Delia and James Elliott, who raised her and her siblings following the death of their parents.  Sister Mary Lavin was also predeceased by five brothers. She is survived by a brother and three sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and friends.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
